About Moca Energy

Moca Energy is a fast-growing startup based in Bristol, on a mission to make energy and building planning simple, accessible, and actionable. Via our platform, we help property management firms, sustainability advisors, and asset managers understand their buildings better, reducing energy usage and carbon emissions by using smart data, clear options, and informed decision-making support.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Buildings Engineer to join our core team. You will be our most senior technical expert on buildings and energy systems, shaping our capabilities and delivering value directly to our clients.

You’ll carry out detailed energy audits, analyze building performance, build mathematical models, and identify opportunities for improvement across HVAC, lighting, BMS and wider energy systems — with a clear focus on low-carbon solutions. You’ll also engage with OEMs and installers to stay ahead of technology developments and pricing.

This is a critical hire as we scale. You will directly influence the future of Moca Energy’s product and service offerings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver building energy audits against building regulations, energy targets, and decarbonisation goals across a range of commercial properties.
  • Analyze energy consumption data, building information, and operational practices.
  • Work with software engineers to build and improve simple mathematical models (e.g. MS Excel) to simulate building energy performance and improvement scenarios.
  • Identify and recommend improvements across HVAC, lighting, controls, and other systems, focusing on practical low-carbon solutions.
  • Research and engage with technology suppliers, manufacturers, and installers to stay on top of the latest innovations and costs.
  • Produce clear, insightful audit reports and technical documents for clients and internal teams.
  • Support software product development by providing expert input into Moca Energy’s platform and tools.
  • Help build and shape our technical team and processes as we grow.

About You

  • Strong technical background in mechanical, building services, or energy engineering.
  • Deep understanding of building energy systems - HVAC, lighting, controls, and energy management.
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and experience of their application in the built environment.
  • Knowledge of low-carbon technologies (e.g., heat pumps, energy storage, efficient HVAC, smart controls).
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills - able to present technical information clearly.
  • Experience relating energy findings to building regulations, net-zero targets, or corporate ESG goals.
  • Comfortable visiting buildings, engaging with facilities teams, and gathering on-site information.
  • Well-organized, proactive, and able to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Passion for helping businesses decarbonise and making energy decisions easier for clients.

Desirable

  • Professional qualification (CIBSE, Energy Institute, or similar) or working towards it.
  • Experience with energy modelling software (e.g., IES VE, TAS, or other).
  • Knowledge of UK building regulations and relevant standards (Part L, TM54, TM65, etc.).

What We Offer

  • A key role in an exciting early-stage business with big ambitions.
  • Salary: £55,000 - £65,000
  • Flexible working and a collaborative, supportive environment.
  • Opportunity to shape the future of Moca Energy and grow with us.

Studies have suggested women will typically only apply to roles where they meet a large proportion of the specified criteria; however, contrary to this, we’d encourage you to apply even if you don’t tick every box.

If you meet some of the requirements above or have transferable skills you believe would benefit us, we would be delighted to hear from you
